What are we learning in Year 3 this term?

Autumn

Reading

These are the texts that we cover throughout the year:

At St Margaret's we are passionate about reading! We teach a daily reading session based on a  Curriculum for Unity School’s Partnership (CUSP) text.

This term, our core text is 'Greta and the Giants' by Zoe Tucker and 'The Pebble in my Pocket' by Meredith Hooper. The core texts are supplemented by a variety of additional texts, to support children developing their reading fluency and confidence across a range of text types.

Writing

At St Margaret's Primary Academy we follow CUSP for our writing curriculum. The CUSP curriculum is a vocabulary rich, knowledge based approach to help develop pupils' retrieval, vocabulary and deepen learning. During the Autumn term Year 3 will be learning to write poetry, first person narratives, non-chronological reports, formal letters; perform poetry; and use dialogue through narratives.

Maths

At St Margaret's Primary Academy we adopt a Mastery approach to teach maths lessons. The mastery approach supports children in becoming fluent and confident mathematicians. Maths lessons include ‘Flashback 4’ where children recap 4 previously learnt skills, fluency activities and opportunities for children to apply their knowledge to reasoning and problem solving. This half term we will be covering place value, length and perimeter, and addition and subtraction.

Children will have the opportunity to practice and develop their multiplication tables knowledge daily.

This term we are focusing on our 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables.

History

In history, we will be stepping back in time to study the changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We will be focusing on:

  • What were the three ages on the Stone Age
  • What were Paleolithic times like? How do we know?
  • What were Mesolithic times like? How do we know?
  • What were Neolithic times like? How do we know?
  • What was different between the different Stone Age periods?

Science

This half term, children will learn about rocks. They will learn to compare and group different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties, describe in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock, and recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter. We will look at:

  • How are rocks formed?
  • What types of rocks are there?
  • Can rocks change?
  • How can we test a rock to see if it is limestone or chalk?
  • Is soil or just dirt? What makes soil?
  • How are fossils formed?

French

This year we will be learning to speak French!

We will be starting with greetings and the classroom.

We will know:

  • How to greet people
  • How to say colours
  • Some classroom objects

We will be able to:

  • Use and respond to greetings
  • Greet people accordingly to who they are and the time of the day
  • Name classroom objects
  • Describe nouns using colour adjectives
  • Respond to instructions

PSHE

At St. Margaret's Primary Academy, we follow JIGSAW as our PSHE scheme of learning.

This half term we will be looking at "Being me in my World".

We will cover the following topics:

  • Helping others to feel welcome
  • Trying to make our school community a better place
  • Thinking about everyone's right to learn
  • Caring about other people's feelings
  • Working well with others
  • Choosing to follow our Learning Charter

RE

During this half term we will be studying the Sikh religion. Our learning question and enquiry will focus around, "Who is God to Sikhs?"

We will be focusing on:

  • Talking about important people in our life and explain what makes them special
  • Retelling the story of Guru Nanak and share a key message from the story about how Sikhs believe people should live
  • Explaining what the Guru Granth Sahib is and why it is special to Sikhs
  • Explaining 3 things Sikhs believe about God
  • Talking about what I believe in or what is important to me. I can re-tell a story of the Sikh religion and begin to explain what Sikhs believe about God
  • Understanding how to treat people that are special to me and can talk about how what people believe can help them to try and live a better life

Home learning

We expect children to read a minimum of 3 times a week at home; this should be logged on Boom Reader. If you need support with Boom Reader, please come and speak to a member of the Year 3 team who will be more than happy to help.

Children are expected to practice their times tables at home regularly using 'Times Tables Rockstars' (TTRS)

https://ttrockstars.com/

If you need support with logging into TTRS or are unaware of your child's login, please reach out to a member of the Year 3 team.
