What are we learning in Year 3 this term?
Summer
Reading
These are the texts that we cover throughout the year:

At St. Margaret's we are passionate about reading! We teach a daily reading session based on a Curriculum for Unity School’s Partnership (CUSP) text.
This term, our core text is "The Magician's Nephew" written by C.S. Lewis. This core text is supplemented by a variety of additional texts, to support children developing their reading fluency and confidence across a range of text types.
Writing
At St Margaret's Primary Academy we follow CUSP for our writing curriculum. The CUSP curriculum is a vocabulary rich, knowledge based approach to help develop pupils' retrieval, vocabulary and deepen learning. During the Summer term Year 3 will be learning to write a third person narrative, use dialogue within a narrative and formal letters to complain.
Maths
At St Margaret's Primary Academy we adopt a Mastery approach to teach maths lessons. The mastery approach supports children in becoming fluent and confident mathematicians. Maths lessons begin with a recap on foundational skills, ensuring those gaps are covered and recapped. This half term we will be focusing on money, measuring mass and weight, and time.
Children will have the opportunity to practice and develop their multiplication tables knowledge daily.
This term we are focusing on our 4 and 8 times tables, whilst revisiting our 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.
Geography
In geography, we will be looking at OS Maps. We will be focusing on:
- What is an OS Map
- How does a scale change the way we describe a place?
- What’s the area like just beyond the school?
- What’s the area like beyond our region?
Science
This half term, children will be learning about light.
We will be focusing on the following concepts:
- Do we need light to see things?
- How are shadows formed?
- What happens to the size of a shadow when the object moves closer to, or away from, the light source?
PSHE
At St. Margaret's Primary Academy, we follow JIGSAW as our PSHE scheme of learning.
This half term we will be looking at changes within ourselves and changes within school as we prepare for our next academic year.
We will be taking a deeper look at:
- How babies grow
- Babies
- Outside body changes
- Inside body changes
- Family Stereotypes
- Looking ahead to next year
RE
During this half term we will be studying the Sikhism religion. Our learning question and enquiry will focus around, "Does taking part in Baisakhi help Sikh children have a sense of belonging?"
We will be focusing on:
- I can describe a festival or celebration and say why it is special
- I can retell the story of Baisakhi and say how Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa
- I can talk about how Baisakhi (or Vaisakhi) is celebrated
- I can recognise Sikh symbols and reflect on their meaning
- I can remember some parts of the story of Baisakhi and say how the Khalsa was formed
- I can plan a meaningful celebration and say why it is special
Home learning

We expect children to read a minimum of 3 times a week at home; this should be logged in their Reading Record.
Children are expected to practice their times tables at home regularly using 'Times Tables Rockstars' (TTRS)
https://ttrockstars.com/
If you need support with logging into TTRS or are unaware of your child's login, please reach out to a member of the Year 3 team.
