What are we learning in Year 5 this half term?
Summer 2
Reading
These are the texts that we cover throughout the year:

At St Margaret's we are passionate about reading! We teach a daily reading session based on a Curriculum for Unity School’s Partnership (CUSP) text.

This half term, our core texts are 'Secrets of a Sun King' written by Emma Carroll and 'Five children and IT' written by E. Nesbit. The core texts are supplemented by a variety of additional texts, to support children developing their reading fluency and confidence across a range of text types.
Writing
At St Margaret's Primary Academy we follow CUSP for our writing curriculum. The CUSP curriculum is a vocabulary rich, knowledge based approach to help develop pupils' retrieval, vocabulary and deepen learning. During Summer term Year 5 will be continuing to develop their understanding of writing narratives that include dialogue, as well as moving onto writing balanced arguments and playscripts later in the term.
Maths
At St Margaret's Primary Academy we adopt a Mastery approach to teach maths lessons. The mastery approach supports children in becoming fluent and confident mathematicians. Maths lessons include ‘Flashback 4’ where children recap 4 previously learnt skills, fluency activities and opportunities for children to apply their knowledge to reasoning and problem solving. This term we will complete our blocks of learning based on:
- Geometry: Properties of shapes
- Geometry: Position and direction
- Number: Decimals
- Number: Negative Numbers
- Measurement: Converting units
- Measurement: Volume
Children will have the opportunity to practise and develop their times table knowledge daily.
History and Geography
In History we will be focusing on the Kingdom of Benin and how it compares and contrasts to the Anglo Saxon way of life. In Geography their will be a focus on the local area and how we use coordinates to understand where we are on an Ordinance Survey map.
Science
This half term, children will learn about living things and their habitats. Including a focus on different living things life cycles and how they reproduce in different ways depending on their species. Also they will have a focus on the biologist Marie Marion and why she was important to our understanding of the natural world.
Home learning

We expect children to read a minimum of 3 times a week at home; this should be logged on Boom Reader. If you need support with Boom Reader, please come and speak to a member of the Year 5 team who will be more than happy to help.

Children are expected to practise their times tables at home regularly using Times Tables Rockstar.
