What are we learning in Year 6 this half term?

Autumn

Reading

These are the texts that we cover throughout the year:

At St Margaret's we are passionate about reading! We teach a daily reading session based on a  Curriculum for Unity School’s Partnership (CUSP) text.

This half term, our core text is Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell. The core texts are supplemented by a variety of additional texts, to support children developing their reading fluency and confidence across a range of text types.

Writing

At St Margaret's Primary Academy we follow CUSP for our writing curriculum. The CUSP curriculum is a vocabulary rich, knowledge based approach to help develop pupils' retrieval, vocabulary and deepen learning. During the Summer Term Year 6 will be learning to write autobiographies, speeches, first person stories, poems, explanatory texts and newspaper reports.

Maths

At St Margaret's Primary Academy we adopt a Mastery approach to teach maths lessons. The mastery approach supports children in becoming fluent and confident mathematicians. Maths lessons include ‘Flashback 4’ where children recap 4 previously learnt skills, fluency activities and opportunities for children to apply their knowledge to reasoning and problem solving. This term we will be covering place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and converting units.

Children will have the opportunity to practise and develop their times table knowledge daily.

History

In history, we will be learning about how conflict changed our local area in World War 2. We will be covering:

  • The Battle of Britain and World War Two.
  • Where were the airbases in our locality?
  • Why were the airbases important?
  • What were the affects of the airbases on our local area?
  • How do we remember the brave men and women who defended our country?

Science

This half term, children will learn about electricity. We will be covering:

  • What electricity is and how it works.
  • The components in a series circuit.
  • The effects and consequences of changing circuit components and batteries.

Computing

This half term we will be studying communication and collaboration. In this unit children will explore how data is transferred over the internet. Children will initially focus on addressing, before they move on to the makeup and structure of data packets. Children will then look at how the internet facilitates online communication and collaboration; they will complete shared projects online and evaluate different methods of communication. Finally, they will learn how to communicate responsibly by considering what should and should not be shared on the internet  and how to report concerns about inappropriate content online.

PSHE

In PSHE we will be looking at what is it like to be ourselves in our world. We will be covering:

  • Our year ahead

  • Being a global citizen

  • The learning charter

  • Owning our learning charter

Religious Education

  • What commitment means and how it can be demonstrated in different ways.

  • The significance of Puja and how Puja shows commitment to God.

  • How Sanatanis worship and show devotion to the Gods and Goddesses.

  • Why a Sanatani pilgrimage to the Ganges might show commitment to God.

  • What commitment means to us and how we show it.

Art

This term we will be focusing on drawing. We will be covering:

  • How to draw enlarged images and scale to create abstract forms.

  • How to include detail.

  • How to draw features in proportion and include details.

Home learning

We expect children to read a minimum of 3 times a week at home; this should be logged on Boom Reader. If you need support with Boom Reader, please come and speak to a member of the Year 6 team who will be more than happy to help.

Children are expected to practise their times tables at home regularly using Times Tables Rockstar.
