What are we learning in Year 6 this half term?

Spring

Reading

These are the texts that we cover throughout the year:

At St Margaret's we are passionate about reading! We teach a daily reading session based on a  Curriculum for Unity School’s Partnership (CUSP) text.

This half term, our core text is Skellig by David Almond. The core texts are supplemented by a variety of additional texts, to support children developing their reading fluency and confidence across a range of text types.

Writing

At St Margaret's Primary Academy we follow CUSP for our writing curriculum. The CUSP curriculum is a vocabulary rich, knowledge based approach to help develop pupils' retrieval, vocabulary and deepen learning. During the Spring Term Year 6 will be learning to write extended third person narratives, explanatory texts and autobiographies.

Maths

At St Margaret's Primary Academy we adopt a Mastery approach to teach maths lessons. The mastery approach supports children in becoming fluent and confident mathematicians. Maths lessons include ‘Flashback 4’ where children recap 4 previously learnt skills, fluency activities and opportunities for children to apply their knowledge to reasoning and problem solving. This term we will be covering ratio, algebra, decimals, fractions, percentages, area, perimeter, volume and statistics.

Children will have the opportunity to practise and develop their times table knowledge daily.

History

In History, we will be studying The Windrush Generation.

We will be looking at these areas in more depth:

  • Where are the Caribbean islands?
  • How did the people of the Caribbean help Britain in the war against Nazi Germany and Hitler?
  • Why did people migrate from the Caribbean to England in 1948?
  • What was life in London like for the Windrush pioneers?
  • Who was Same King and what did he do?
  • Who was Norma Best and what did she do?
  • How did the Windrush migration change Britain for the better?

Science

This half term, we will learn about light. We will be covering:

  • How does light travel?
  • What colour is light made of?
  • How does light help us see objects?
  • Which surfaces make the best reflectors?
  • Why do we see objects as a particular colour?
  • What happens to the appearance of objects when placed in water?

Computing

This half term we will be studying web page creation. In this unit children will be introduced to creating webpages for a chosen purpose. Children will identify what makes a good web page and use this information to design and evaluate their own website using google sites. Throughout this unit, children will pay particular attention to copyright laws and fair use of media, the aesthetics of the site and navigation paths.

PSHE

In PSHE we will be looking at dreams and goals. We will be covering:

  • Personal learning goals.

  • Steps to success.

  • Dreams for the world.

  • What the Bible says about why Mary was chosen to be Jesus' mother.

  • How Joseph reacted and was convinced to accept Mary’s pregnancy

  • Selecting images, colours, and textures to support imagery.
  • Understand the purpose of contrast by using opposing colours on the colour wheel.
  • Combine colours and create tones and tints for effect and purpose.

Home learning

We expect children to read a minimum of 3 times a week at home; this should be logged on Boom Reader. If you need support with Boom Reader, please come and speak to a member of the Year 6 team who will be more than happy to help.

Children are expected to practise their times tables at home regularly using Times Tables Rockstar.
